In the
article of David Byrne’s relationship with sounds, he expresses his feelings
toward sound in a very intense, sophisticated kind of manner. He expounded on
how the quality of the sound is not so rich if the space or venues are not
right, the platform is not appropriate for the music being played and the
software being used to play the music is appropriate for the venue. His life
experience with playing these various genre of music and different variations
of sounds at the appropriate venues helped him to come to a conclusion of what
sound fits what venue. In his article he included pictures that would help the
reader to also get a visualization of how the appropriate spaces are for each
sound he played.
In one of
the photos (photo 5) he showed how the African percussive music does well
outside. Of course it is true because the audience needs a big space to dance,
make noise and enjoy the music. In photo 6 he shows how the modification of
this music came to be played in large cathedrals. This type of music became
something that was spiritual. The musicians would have to make longer notes in
order for this harmony to be rich in this kind of venue.
In the rest
of his work he later went on to state how jazz music came about. This was a
very interesting discovery because at first jazz music used to be played at
venues such as funerals. I was a bit shocked because funerals are events where
they mourn, not dance and be happy. This confused me a bit until he later on
stated that they modified the behavior at the venues at which jazz was played.
The audience was no longer allowed to dance and shout during a jazz concert at
such. Other music he discussed was symphony and opera which both do well in big
halls. All in all, the way he expressed his life experiences with these
different genres of music and sound was very interesting. Now we mostly listen
to music by way of mp3 players and computers, etc.
These
selections of songs express what David Byrne’s article was speaking about.
