Gumm'd - Clenched Fists

Before reading about and looking up the term clenched fist, I believed that it symbolized strength and power. In the reading “clenched fist”, it showed the strength of a leader, as explained, it meant how you must attain power with iron fist and blood or violence. I believe this picture shows us just that because of how different it is from the others. Most clenched fist pictures show a fist in the air but this one shows a lot more power because of how the fist is striking the table and breaking it showing power by violence.

This piece created by a student named Tyler Helmick is an example of clenched fist graphis. The text “Some Will Rise” associated with the skeletal clenched fist seems to imply that the people or group associated with the graphic are willing to fight to the death, or that death won't stop them. The clenched fist as a symbol of discontent seems in this case to imply a call to unify a group of people to accomplish a goal, apparently strongly enough to consider death worth the end result.

The Blue Fist has become an image of solidarity and strength not only for the Wisconsin union movement but for the global struggle for social justice and democracy.” –The story behind the Blue Fist

The fist image has been around for almost 200 years and has resurfaced in the Wisconsin union movement. Basically the “fist” means solidarity and defiance in the face of social injustice.

This may be quite different from what "Clenched Fists" would be, as it represented as military power, and solidarity. This link shows that people are using this symbol to fight for their rights to legalize Marijuana. It is in their believe that pot brings no harm to anyone at all, and doesn't kill people at all as it is said. There has been a strong belief that the reason pot is illegal is because the government cannot tax it, therefore they make it illegal.
