Team 518; Forced Obselescence

Forced Obsolescence Team 518

Forced Obsolescence is another way of saying “style engineering.” Where the style or usefulness of objects change overtime to fit into ever changing lifestyles. The marketers and Investors saw that if something looks more futuristic, it could sell better and grab peoples attention more.

This image posted on http://www.deviantart.com/ by “jenleighphotography,” shows how floppy discs are obsolete. In this case the floppy disk is an example on forced obsolescence because of the CD, Flash Drive, and now phones even can store data for you if you need to move a large file around. Here the author takes the floppy drive and makes a piece of art out of it thanks to its bright colours. Now the flash drive is becoming smaller, and getting different designs to have people buy the ones that look cooler.

Old TV by Marcio Bonfim Dribble.com
This Tv has the antenna, turning knobs and the panel glass and the cathode ray tube, features that do not exist in modern televisions. The old-fashioned tv makes a nice look back to what it once was, it makes you think on how far we are now from the antenna and knobs.

This work was posted on Behance.net by David Ellingsen.
This piece shows and obsolete technology, cassette tape, which now have been replaced by MP3 players and CDs. It looks like there is a floppy disk that is in the back. All together, being  obsolete. Using these obsolete technologies makes a nice work.

This posting was displayed to the students of Kent State University in Ohio. Obviously, due to the fact that everyone now has a cellphone, the use of landline telephones in student housing buildings has become obsolete. Landlines are not the only communication device that has become obsolete; I have not seen a phonebooth in ages!
